Body in Tune
This exercise is inspired by the album art from Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. It features a woman with her head replaced by a drum, and has playful, surreal vibe.
For this project, I went with a somewhat sparse composition to let my blueberry-cherry-banjo girl stand out.
Classical Composition
Classical music's vast range of moods, tones, and textures provide a rich variety to guide your collage-making.
I took inspiration fromThe Barber of Seville (by Giachino Rossini, my namesake)- with its sweet, lifting lines followed by lively, bold crescendos. I opted to integrate fabrics and rich, warm colors to reflect its depth and dynamic nature. [placeholder image, project in-process]
Walking on Sunshine
Choose a song with yellow in the title or perhaps a splash of sunshine to create a collage with vibrancy, warmth, and positivity.
Here's my 'Walking on Sunshine' collage with sun sparkles, sunset stripes, yellow text, and solar panels.
Music Cubed
Collage and music have been a perfect combo from the get-go! The first collages come from the Cubists Picasso and Braque. Check out Picasso's “Guitar and Wine Glass” and others for ideas and inspiration.
I opted to feature the distinctive shapes of a violin, which I play. I used collected elements that aligned with Picasso's approach--wallpaper pieces, a leather sample, a snippet of sheet music and a stencil-like piece from an old greeting card.
Red Rhythms
Create a collage that captures the intensity and passion associated with the color red. For my piece, I applied two other techniques:
Working with a single page from a magazine-- a music-oriented one of course! (Jazziz). It's a constraint that can create surprisingly interesting directions.
Paper-tearing, which can create looser shapes and angles, and sometimes some white edges.
Blue Notes
Dive into the world of blue collage by choosing a song with "blue" in the title.
For my blue project, I used a border punch tool on several blue papers. You can see other blue colors showing from underneath. I also used the cutout slivers. There's a bit of water and cloud, and the blue piece with text broke things up a bit, adding some contrast to the simpler elements.
Cut-Out Melody
Use the cut-out technique to explore the silhouette of a musical instrument. This prompt allows you to layer different papers and textures underneath the cut-out to create a rich, textured collage.
My piece 'Bari Blue' is inspired by my daughter who plays jazz bari sax. The saxophone has cut-outs in different parts of the instrument, and I was even able to pull in more music elements-- and old LP sleeve with the word 'blue' and some snippets of old sheet music.
Song Inspiration… Randomized
Shake up your creative process by letting chance decide your musical inspiration. Use an online tool or ask a friend to randomly select a song, then create a collage that reflects the theme, colors, and vibe of the chosen track.
Inspired by Song
Start with a favorite song and let it guide your collage-making process. This encourages you to use colors, shapes, and textures to capture the mood and emotion of the music.
Here's my piece which pairs with Laufey's song 'Falling Behind'' .... "Everybody's falling in love and I'm falling behind."
