Inspired by Song
Start with a favorite song and let it guide your collage-making process. This encourages you to use colors, shapes, and textures to capture the mood and emotion of the music.
Steps:
Choose a song that resonates with you. It can be any style-- instrumental or lyrical
Jot down a few ideas to capture the essence of the song. This could include lyrical phrases, images, colors, or the overall mood.
For example, if you’re listening to Moon River, you might start with the obvious: moon and river, and expand from there: midnight, ocean, stars, melancholy, dreamy, nostalgic, wistful.
Consider adding some lyrical phrases: heartbreaker, rainbow’s end, wider than a mile, off to see the world.
You might also note cultural references like Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the 1960s.
From this one example, you can see how one song could take you in several different visual directions.
With these ideas and notes in mind, begin sourcing images for your collage.
Depending on what you find, you could end up anchoring your collage with an image of a moon. Or in the classic chic style of the 1960s. Perhaps you find some text about adventures (playing off the line ‘off to see the world’)
Once you select some papers and images to work with, play that favorite tune in the background, and see where the idea and the music takes you.
Experiment with different compositions, and let the feel of the music inspire your choices.
